what is SAMI Essay Contest?

The SAMI Student Essay Contest is the 8th annual contest held to recognize promising ideas and solutions related to resilience and sustainability in agri-food system management amidst global uncertainty. This competition is open to all students attending the SAMI Summer Course 2025. At the reviewers’ discretion, a maximum of three winning essays will receive special awards. Additionally, the winning essays will be published in the SAMI Proceeding 2025 with ISBN.

ESSAY GUIDELINE

ESSAY Guidelines

  1. Please describe the central problem, the situation in which the problem is embedded and your own role in addressing the problem.
  2. Incorporate five most important and/or influential (groups of) stakeholders in the context of the problem.
  3. Please give a short description of their respective roles and then use your experience as inspiration in writing your essay.
  4. As a special edition, this year’s contest involves action in addition to writing, so that participating in the contest directly contributes to creating a better world.
  5. Please note, however, that only the essay itself will be considered in the selection process.
  6. Essays may be submitted by anyone who will join SAMI 2025.
  7. Essays must be 1000 words or less in English excluding essay title and cover page.
  8. Essays must be typed in MS word format
  9. Entries may be submitted by online at http://bit.ly/SAMI2025Submission
  10. Essays must be original and unpublished. Plagiarized entries will be rejected.
  11. Copyright of the essays entered will be assigned to the organizer.

Joining SAMI Essay Contest Presentation

  • Join a test Zoom session in advance via https://zoom.us/test
  • Please join the webinar/meeting room 10–15 minutes early to avoid last-minute issues.
  • Ensure your device meets Zoom’s system requirements (PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, or Android).
  • Use the virtual background provided via https://bit.ly/vbg-sami25

The Rules of SAMI Essay Contest Presentation

  • Presentation Time: Each group will be given 15 minutes to present their essay.
  • Format: Presentations must be delivered in English, using PowerPoint slides (PPT).
  • Originality: Content must be the participant’s own work. Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
  • Q&A Session: After the presentation, the reviewers may ask several questions.
  • Technical Readiness: Ensure your microphone, camera, and slides are working properly before the session.
  • Virtual Etiquette: Keep your camera on, dress appropriately, and be ready when called.

Eligibility for SAMI Awards & Certificate of Completion

To be eligible for SAMI Awards, all participants must:

  1. Join the contest session on Zoom using the unique link provided in the registration email.
  2. Attend the entire program schedule, including opening, essay contest, and closing.
  3. Complete the Working Group (Essay) and deliver the presentation.
  4. Submit the SAMI evaluation feedback form.

All invited participants will receive a SAMI Certificate of Completion upon successful participation in the classes and submission of the evaluation form.
