The Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Management has organized The 7th SAMI (Sustainable Agri-food Management in Indonesia) Summer Course with the theme “Agrifood System Transformation Under Climate Risk in Emerging Economy”. This activity was held hybrid on July 2-13, 2023, and 85 participants from 11 countries and 23 national and international universities attended. With this Hybrid scheme, 28 participants were offline from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Afghanistan and 57 online participants from Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Liberia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Vietnam and Myanmar.

The 7th SAMI Summer Course, led by Mrs Rindang Matoati, S.E., M.Sc., carried out a hybrid organizing scheme by involving 14 speakers, namely Dr Salahudin Muhidin (Macquarie University – Australia), Thomas van Rossum (Agrodite.com – Netherlands), Dr Renates Kizys (University of Southampton – UK), Assoc Prof. Ammar Abdul Aziz (The University of Queensland – Australia), Dr Ir. Edi Setijawan (OJK – Indonesia), Dr Eko Hari Purnomo (IPB University), Prof. Dr Luis Mota (Universidade Europeia- Portugal), Dr Ir. Ageng Setiawan Herianto, M.Sc. (FAO Representative – Indonesia), Dr Ir. Jono M. Munandar, M.Sc. (IPB University – Indonesia), and Mrs Elisabeth RT Siahaan, represented by Mrs Meity Sudiarsih (PT Antam, Tbk. – Indonesia). In addition, participants also participated in a series of field trips to several institutions, including Cifor, Edufarmers International, PT Danone Indonesia in Sukabumi, FAO Representative in Jakarta, PT BRI Tbk in Jakarta, ATP IPB, and STP IPB. They visited Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII).

On the last day of the 7th SAMI Summer Course, participants participated in the SAMI Essay Contest 2023 final round, which 16 groups attended. This activity is an essay and poster competition coordinated by Mrs. Nurul Hidayati, S.E., M.Si. The judges involved were Prof. Dr Ir. Ma’mun, M.S., M.Ec., Dr Jul Thanasrivanitchai (Kasetsart Univerity – Thailand), Mrs Nisa Zahra, S.T.P., M.Si. (IPB University – Indonesia), Dr. Ir. Jono M. Munandar, M.Sc. (IPB University – Indonesia), Mrs. Rindah F. Suryawati, S.E., M.Acc., Ak. (Airlangga University – Indonesia), and Prof. Madya Dr. Zuraina Dato’ Mansor (UPM University – Malaysia). Of course, this activity is a place for participants to show their ability to write essays and posters with a theme similar to The 7th SAMI Summer Course 2023. The focus issues that participants can explore are sustainable agri-food supply chain management, quality management in food chains, green marketing & consumer behavior, figital & technology innovation/added value in management issues, traceability of agri-food products, value chain development, financing issues in the agri-food sector, opportunities & innovation in the agro-food sector, knowledge management & dynamic capabilities in the agri-food systems, human resource & management challenges in the agri-food sector, and Inclusion of smallholder farmers & collaboration system. The output of this activity can increase student achievement on an international scale. At least 11 of the 14 champions in this activity can be by IPB students, including 4 categories of best group essay, 4 categories of best group poster, 2 categories of best delegation, and 1 category of best oral presenter.

The 7th SAMI Summer Course is the Department of Management Faculty of Economics and Management IPB University’s first hybrid activity. Even though implementing a hybrid scheme has never been done to organize international-scale activities, participants were surprisingly enthusiastic about participating in the whole agenda, accompanied by the committee’s support. Furthermore, the 7th SAMI Summer Course gave a valuable and unforgettable experience for all the participants. On the last day of this activity, the closing ceremony & graduation day, which was held on Thursday, July 13, 2023, the participants dissolved in joy and sorrow & seemed reluctant to part. They expressed an amazing journey and experience, especially for participants who attended offline.

Of course, we would also like to thank the Directorate of International Education for giving the Department of Management the trust to organize The 7th SAMI Summer Course 2023 and the Directorate of Student Affairs for facilitating the SAMI Essay Contest 2023 organization.
